Metadata Catalog Specialist - Indianapolis - Hybrid
aFit Staffing is seeking a Metadata Catalog Specialist to execute the hands-on work of building out a client's data catalog: scanning source systems, tagging and classifying datasets, curating catalog entries, and producing dataset-level documentation. This role is the primary point of execution for turning an enterprise metadata model and cataloging standards into a populated, usable catalog, and works directly with business or agency stewards during onboarding.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
Metadata Scanning, Tagging & Catalog Curation
- Execute metadata scanning and classification of datasets as systems are onboarded by wave.
- Tag and curate catalog entries in accordance with the enterprise metadata model and cataloging standards.
- Produce dataset-level documentation for cataloged and inventoried datasets.
- Administer the data catalog platform, including user access, workflow configuration, and connector/scanner setup.
Taxonomy, Glossary & Discoverability
- Contribute to and maintain business glossary terms, taxonomies, and classification hierarchies.
- Improve dataset discoverability through consistent tagging, descriptions, and search optimization within the catalog.
- Perform periodic quality checks on metadata completeness and accuracy across the catalog.
Onboarding & Standardization
- Assist with catalog standardization and implementation during onboarding waves.
- Support business units or agencies in applying consistent metadata, naming, and classification conventions.
- Contribute to source and dataset inventories as part of catalog build-out.
Stewardship Enablement & Training
- Build and maintain reusable templates, checklists, and job aids for data stewards.
- Apply privacy/sensitivity classification to catalog entries and associated access-control tagging.
- Train and support end users and data stewards on catalog tool usage and metadata standards.
- Capture lessons learned and recurring patterns from onboarding to improve future catalog builds.
Documentation & Reporting Support
- Maintain catalog onboarding and lineage rollout summaries for status reporting.
- Support project managers and architects with backlog items related to scanning, classification, and catalog readiness.
- Store documentation and catalog artifacts in client-owned repositories as directed.
REQUIRED CERTIFICATIONS : A relevant data catalog or governance platform certification (e.g., Microsoft Applied Skills / Purview data governance credential, Informatica certification), or equivalent demonstrated hands-on catalog experience in lieu of certification.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
- 3+ years of experience in metadata management, data cataloging, or data stewardship execution roles.
- Hands-on experience scanning, classifying, and tagging datasets within a data catalog or governance platform.
- Experience developing or maintaining taxonomies, ontologies, or business glossaries.
- Direct experience with Microsoft Purview catalog scanning and classification.
- Experience working directly with business or agency stakeholders during data onboarding, including end-user training.
- Familiarity with privacy/sensitivity classification frameworks.
- Familiarity with Informatica or Databricks metadata capabilities.
